Presidential Power Rankings # 13

March 28, 2007

Will Gore, Gingrich, and Thompson get in?

Will Edwards be able to stay in?

Just how badly does Richardson want to be Hillary's running-mate?

Oh, so many questions.

But not many changes in this week's rankings.

Democrats:

1. Hillary Rodham Clinton (1)
2. Barack Obama (2)
3. John Edwards (3)
4. Al Gore (4)
5. Bill Richardson (5)
6. Joe Biden (6)
7. Chris Dodd (7)
8. Dennis Kucinich (8)
9. Wesley Clark (9)
10. Mike Gravel (10)

Republicans:

1. Rudy Giuliani (1)
2. Mitt Romney (2)
3. John McCain (3)
4. Fred Thompson (4)
5. Mike Huckabee (5)
6. Sam Brownback (6)
7. Newt Gingrich (7)
8. Duncan Hunter (8)
9. Tommy Thompson (9)
10. Ron Paul(new)

The only change I am making is the addition of Congressman Ron Paul to the list. Somehow, the darling of libertarians managed to register at about 3 % in a national poll of GOP hopefuls, so that ought to be enough to be worthy of knocking off the infrequently noticed campaign of Jim Gilmore.

I agree with Anonymous. It's just that Corey is a partisan supporter of Mitt Romney, and that appears to be slanting his ratings (other than that they appear sound.)

I have to laugh at the vanity of your decision to back Romney, Corey. Tommy Thompson was an accomplished and successful governor who bridged the partisan divide to win re-election twice in a Democratic-leaning state. He went on to serve with distinction (or so most Republicans would claim) as HHS secretary. What really qualifies Romney, a one-term lightweight whose only other claim to fame, other than his last name, was running the Olympics, to be president of the United States, especially above a seasoned and experienced leader like Tommy Thompson? I think he's easily the best candidate you guys have got, but you seem to be ignoring him. As a Democrat, that's great news for me...I'd love to see Mitt nominated perhaps more than anyone else save maybe Gingrich or Tancredo.

I detailed why exactly I am supporting Romney on a post here on January 1. I won't rehash that.

I find the whole Democrat talking up Tommy Thompson thing to be interesting, and I will say that I have a lot of admiration for Governor Thompson, I am closer in line with Romney on Iraq, and feel he would be a stronger general election candidate.

Furthermore, Tommy Thompson is not going to be a top tier contender for the GOP nomination. It will come down to one of three people (potentially four) and Tommy is not going to be one of them.

I maintain that Mitt Romney still has a very good chance of winning the nomination. We have just finished the fourth quarter of 2007, and he has done an impressive job raising money and building an organization in a lot of key places. At this still early stage in the game, that is probably more important than simply having high name recognition, leading meaningless national polls, or being the "flavor of the month" in a campaign that most people have yet to tune into and may very well be burned out over by the end of the year.

We now know today that Mitt Romney appears to have raised *twice* as much money as John McCain in the first quarter of 2007, for the primary campaign.

I think that might very well justify my ranking Romney over McCain at this point.

I think that Romney has a decent shot at the Republican nomination, even though he's tanking badly right now. He wouldn't have much chance in the general election.

But, that's as of now...things can easily change. Rudy is definitely flavor of the month. Personally, I don't like either him or Hillary.

Iowa numbers show Romney far behind and only one NH poll shows him tied with McCain for the lead. Every other poll has him down at 3%-7% behind Gingrich and Fred Thompson. I think Romney is far from the #2 slot.

Actually, there are Iowa polls showing a virtual three way tie for first.
