Super Bowl LIX
This is what I wrote last year:
"It is pretty amazing to think that the
Chiefs, who lost the first Super Bowl, were in two out of the first
four. They won back in early 1970 and then went 50 years... 50 years!
before making it back to the Super Bowl. They did not even come close to
going most of that time. So, growing up, I always sort of felt sorry for
the Chiefs as a cursed franchise and rooted for them.
Now,
the Chiefs are in their fourth Super Bowl in the last six years. They
won four years ago against the Niners, then lost one, and now are the
reigning champions. Many people have gotten pretty sick of them winning."
Well, we have some major deja vu. I did root for Chiefs to win another one last season and indeed they did. Now,t hey are playing in their fifth Super Bowl in the last seven years, having already won three of them, and are currently attempting to become the first ever NFL franchise to win three straight Super Bowls.
Once again, like was the case last year, it will be another Super Bowl rematch. Kansas City has now twice beaten the 49ers and now will be trying to defeat the Eagles once again, as they did in early 2023. Like last season, Taylor Swift will be shown multiple times in the broadcast, and conspiracy theorists will be looking for evidence that the NFL officials are trying to grease the skids for the Chiefs.
There are indeed a lot of reasons to root against the Kansas City Chiefs and for the sports word to turn the page on them. I very much wanted to see Buffalo represent the AFC instead. I also wanted to see a different team represent the NFC. While certainly not at Packer-level hatred, I have always disliked the Eagles and Philly sports fans are among the worst of the worst. Few people will argue with that and those fans themselves seem to be proud of it.
So, am I going to once again root for the Chiefs? I mean, yeah, I guess I have to. Blame the Eagles. Frankly, a part of me might be satisfied to see KC lose, but it's pretty much inevitable they will win. It is just what they do. Maybe the fix is in. Maye it is divine intervention. After 50 years of Super Bowl futility, as long as Tom Brady is not on the other sideline, they can no longer be stopped.
I hope it is a good game. Kansas City will probably win a one score game once again. We certainly can use an entertaining diversion these days.
