Presidential Power Rankings # 34

August 22, 2007

Democrats:

1. Hillary Clinton (1)
2. Barack Obama (2)
3. John Edwards (3)
4. Bill Richardson (4)
5. Al Gore (5)
6. Chris Dodd (6)
7. Joe Biden (7)
8. Dennis Kucinich (8)
9. Mike Gravel (9)
10. Wesley Clark (10)

No changes this week again. Boring, boring, boring, despite the fact that they are going after each other a lot more and using their wives to attack Hillary.

For his part, John Edwards must have fallen asleep when he went to go see SiCko because he is not sure that Cuba has a state run health care system.

Republicans:

1. Mitt Romney (1)
2. Rudy Giuliani (2)
3. Fred Thompson (3)
4. John McCain (4)
5. Mike Huckabee (5)
6. Newt Gingrich (6)
7. Sam Brownback (7)
8. Ron Paul (9)
9. Tom Tancredo (8)
10. Duncan Hunter (10)

I very much enjoyed taking part in the first ever Illinois Republican Straw Poll while making a trip to the State Fair in Springfield last Thursday and was very happy to cast a vote for Mitt Romney, en route to seeing him win a surprising landslide victory.

But I also certainly noticed at that outing, that while Ron Paul does not have a prayer of winning the GOP nomination (and may in fact be defeated in a Congressional primary in his home district next year), he definitely has an army of colorful characters who seem to view him as some sort of Savior. But based on that grassroots enthusiasm, I have to move him up a spot ahead of Tancredo and it is conceivable that he could overtake Brownback. I think he will last longer in the race for instance.

Also, this is certainly not the case among the general public, but when it comes to grassroots GOP support, Mike Huckabee may eventually overtake John McCain.

At this point, I'm impressed by Romney's leads in Iowa and New Hampshire. Maybe he has a chance after all. He gets trounced, though, in head-to head polls vs. Hillary Clinton.

Sadly, Hillary is extending her leads in all the early primary states. I think the democrats are poised to nominate her, and like Rush Limbaugh, I think if she gets nominated there's an 80% she will be elected. We'll be in for 4 more years of the same b.s. we've been putting up with in gov't since the 80's. We need change. If it's Romney vs. Hillary I'll vote for Romney, as unpalatable voting republican would be for me.

I live near Ron Paul's district, there is a lot of enthusiasm among his supporters. I see quite a few Paul signs. I'll admit there's something to be said in this day and age for the libertarian viewpoint.

Thanks for your comments aaron.

I am certainly glad to hear you would vote for Romney!

There have been polls showing a dead heat between him and Hillary. At this point though, he is still much less well known nationally than all the other major candidates.

If he earns the nomination next February, there will be a long time to campaign, and I would tend to like his chances.

I won't comment on whatever "making a strip" is... Ron Paul obviously won't win, but I think he could well be a big story this primary season. Candidates with passionate supporters often perform beyond their polling strength, especially in caucuses. He may well surprise people which will also be interesting as it reveals a dissatisfaction with the Iraq War, Paul's only issue, among Republicans.

Corey did you hear that John Kennedy switched to the GOP in Lousianna yesterday? He apparently had a change of heart and decided to switch. Move Mary Landrieu back into the endangered column! The Democrats in Lousianna are collapseing just like their neighbors next door in Mississippi are!

And I would definitely move Paul up above Brownback and McCain down below Huckabee. What have Brownback or Huckabee done, of interest, in the past two months?

Thanks for alerting me to that embarassing typo sku.

Good news about Kennedy in Louisiana.

Once Sept. starts, I will have posts on all the 2007 races and brief rundowns of everything going on for 2008 Senate/Governor as well.

I will address the Paul/Brownback/McCain/Huckabee thing tomorrow a little more.

Thanks for all the comments!

And I meant to ask, above, what have Brownback or McCain done in the past two months that is of any interest.
