Hawai'i U.S. Senate Race

Race of the Day

August 14, 2006
85 Days Until Election Day

Hawai’i U.S. Senate
Status: Democrat Incumbent
2004 Presidential Result: Blue State (West)

Outlook: Safe Democrat

A ho-hum contest for the U.S. Senate in Hawai’i, in which incumbentDemocrat Daniel Akaka was expected to cruise to reelection over little if any opposition, was suddenly thrown for a loop when Congressman Ed Case announced that he would seek to oppose Akaka in the Democrat primary. Case’s rationale subtly seemed to be that Akaka had become less than energetic in office and that since he and his senior colleague Daniel Inouye, who will both turn 82 next month, might possibly not live throughout the remainder of any future term, the state would wind up with a U.S. Senator, appointed by the popular Republican Governor Linda Lingle. This is in spite of the fact that the law in Hawai’i now seems to demand that the Governor appoint a U.S. Senator of the same party from which the person whose seat it was belonged to.

Nobody really saw this Case maneuver coming and it had raised several very interesting questions about this race. While the end result was always that it was very likely that a Democrat would hold the seat, there are several factors to now consider.

Some had theorized that the ambitious Case had pushed ahead thinking that Akaka would get the message and decide not to seek another term. However, the Democrat establishment in both Hawai’i and Washington D.C. quickly rallied around Akaka, whom conventional wisdom had as a solid favorite to win the primary matchup. Some, like Hawai’i’s other Congressman, Neil Abercrombie, who had been waiting his own turn to run for the U.S. Senate in the Aloha State have voiced a bit of resentment against Case for taking such a blatantly aggressive move and the DSCC has stepped in to say that they will support their incumbent Senator in this race.

Race and ethnicity are also factors as Akaka is one of just a handful of non-white U.S. Senators and the only Member of Congress to ever come from Native Hawaiian ancestry. Case is white and is running for office in a majority minority state has not elected a caucasian to the U.S. Senate in several decades.

For those who will be focusing on the issues, there are indeed some differences between the candidates as Akaka voted against the Iraq War, while Case had been seen during his initial campaign for Congress as being more generally supportive of the mission. All in all, Case is viewed as being somewhat more moderate than Akaka who comes from the traditional, old school liberal wing of the Hawai’i Democrat Party even though Case is an opponent of drilling for oil in ANWR while Akaka and Inouye both have consistently voted in favor of it.

For his part, Case announced his candidacy by taking the odd tact of saying that he did not have any problems with Akaka’s voting record but that people might have concerns with his stamina and even his likelihood of completing another six year term and thus Case believes he is needed to prevent a Republican or even a quasi-Republican from eventually becoming a U.S. Senator through appointment and tha tit would be crucial for another Democrat to start building up seniority as soon as possible.

In a state where incumbents tend to almost always be reelected and Akaka’s seniority in Washington is indeed considered very important; the initial thought was that Case might have made a serious career blunder as Akaka appeared to be energized by the primary challenge. Some speculated that there would be greater pressure on Case to be the one to drop out of before the filing deadline. However both Akaka and Case have stuck to their guns and to the surprise of many, Case is now in a virtual dead heat with Akaka in Democrat primary polls, and Akaka might be in serious danger of being the second veteran Democrat Senator to be defeated in a primary this year.

As for the Republicans, the most prominent GOP politicians in the state all passed on the race, including the Governor and Lt. Governor (who had been running for reelection) and some other promising figures in the party who instead decided to try for Case’s open House seat. It has to be said that Hawai’i Republicans have missed out by not fielding a strong candidate and attempting to try to take some advantage from the contentious battle brewing among the Democrats in the state. Considering the racial aspect of a caucasian Democrat possibly defeating an Asian-Pacific incumbent, a minority Republican could have been hypothetically been even more intriguing to voters in the aftermath of the Democrat primary.

There was some moderate enthusiasm among the state's Republican establishment when Jerry Coffee, a 72 year old retired Navy Captain, and former Vietnam War POW, who is white, announced his candidacy. However, earlier this month, Coffee underwent emergency heart surgery and “suspended” his campaign. At this point, it is very unclear if Coffee could resume a campaign after the September primary, if he were to happen to be nominated by absentia, but any chance that Coffee might have had would seem to now be gone, especially considering that the key component of the Akaka vs. Case main event are concerns about age and health. A Rasmussen Reports poll released last week shows both Democrats way in front of Coffee, but interestingly enough, the Republican runs 14 points closer to the incumbent Akaka than he does against the challenger Case. That seems to be a sign that many Republicans in the state have made the decision that Case would be their best option. The other Republicans seeking the nomination would all be considered nothing more than sacrificial pigs at the political luau, which what was the expected situation for the GOP anyway before Case threw everyone for a loop.

So, with Republicans focusing on maintaining and furthering their recent gains on other races in the state, they may be left wondering “what if”, especially if the Democrat primary turns nasty and the party finds it hard to unite afterwards. If Akaka is to win renomination, it will be with the assistance of the state and national party establishment who would want to protect a party stalwart and also not have to deal with the symbolism of the loss of one of the most prominent Asian Pacific politicians in the country, and the backlash that such an event could have hypothetically cause in the state. However, there does not seem to be much of an effort among national “netroots” movements in the party to save Akaka from going down to defeat against an opponent who would perhaps vote slightly more often with the GOP.

If Akaka is victorious, any damage done by Case in regards to causing concerns in the voters’ minds about age and stamina will not be a factor against a token Republican effort in the general election and he will win the right to serve a fourth full term. If Case is victorious, he will be poised to serve in the upper body of Congress for quite a while, and his big roll of the political ambition dice will have paid off quite nicely.

Hawaii US Senate 2006 GOP Candidate Eddie Pirkowski's Platform Creates Hawaii Leaders with Respect, Commitment, Trust, Equality in the Style of Lincoln, and, Kennedy.

My US Senate Hawaii platform goals for the state of Hawaii are far reaching, and includes creating strong leaders in Hawaii that are respected worldwide. Hawaii is currently a leader in technology, agribusiness, "green" communities," defense, and crisis management. The islands will backup critical US based infrastructure by state, and all core US businesses by industry. This backup and disaster recovery backbone will form the basis for $100B+ of new business by industry here in Hawaii. These business relationships, and partnerships will complement existing Hawaii core industries of tourism, hospitality, food, agribusiness, real estate, construction, health care, high technology, defense and associated industries. As one of the US Senate's Hawaii leaders, I will restore respect, trust and, honor in both public, private, and, nonprofit services throughout Hawaii, and the US, and thereby strengthen our defense with renewed respect on the world stage.

Good morning, my platform to reach the US Senate in Hawaii complements Hawaii GOP leader Governor Linda Lingle's to create new leadership for Hawaii in the US Senate in the style of Lincoln, and Kennedy, and a Hawaii state, county, and local government of inclusion, respect, commitment, trust and equality for all people.

It has been far too long for creation of Hawaiian sovereignty with respect for all, therefore I recommend immediate dual citizenship status (US & Hawaiian Passports) with appropriate US Federal, State, County, City & Hawaii recognition.

Because of the location of Hawaii, from New York and Japan, it is the perfect location for 24 hour trading worldwide. The creation of a new Hawaii Stock Exchange (HSX) , will bring retail, proprietary, and specialist trading, private equity, private hedge funds, venture capital, and derivatives risk platforms capital with partnerships with US, EEC & Asian exchange leaders.

The State of Hawaii will use $100M+ of the current $500M+ surplus to create the nations only AAA credit rating for Hawaii (currently AA- rating is highest in the nation) in order, to create a derivatives hedging exchange to reduce risk, reduce State, and County cost of borrowing, increase rates of return on investment, and prepay interest on long term debt.

America was built on the strength, and creativity of its immigrant population, therefore I recommend immigration reform including restoration of respect to all citizens and, to provide all with a 100% path to US citizenship.

I recommend 100% independence for all the islands of Hawaii for Energy, Food, Transportation, Health Care, Housing, Agribusiness, Defense, and Government.

I see a need for a renewed focus on Hawaii's children, "keiki" with increased funding, and focus on flexibility in education, new scholarships, new UH extensions, new UH distance learning programs, new tools, supplies, internet education, and, high technology access including laptops and access to high speed servers and internet (Internet2) for all pre-school to post graduate school students including islandwide advanced wireless internet networks in all our communities.

UH extensions programs, and facilities for all Islands will increase leadership, include extensions for the medical school / teaching hospitals, new large and small animal veterinary centers, energy centers, transportation hubs, agribusiness centers, life sciences, and engineering technology centers. These provide a path for our children and our families to reach advanced learning without leaving the island of our choice. The choice of home defines the potential of each island to reach the goals of "green" self sustaining communities on all our islands.

The focus on preventative medical care, high technology and local medical specialist access, and support for existinng and new facilities by community on all Hawaiian islands including Maui, Hawaii, Molokai, Kauai and Oahu must be the decision of each of our Mayors. These mayors deserve a debt of gratitude for continuing to lead, and make strong decisions for our common future.

Hawaii's rich diversity of plants and animals provides a wealth of diversity . This diversity will create a UH genetic biodiversity database of all Hawaii native plants, and animals to guarantee our future with respect for our common past.

New advanced transportation systems will focus on independent "green" walking communities, with new private and, public buses, and increased route coverage for all our seniors and children.

I recommend the development of advanced transportation systems for 100% independent transportation by island for Air, Land, Sea, and Rail.

Private and Public Partnerships will create over $100B+ of new business by Industry in the Hawaiian Islands with advanced transaction grids to share revenues, paydown taxes, and create a surplus to invest to ensure our future. I believe all islands surpluses can be used as a foundation for strength here in Hawaii, and as an example to the rest of the US.

Decentralized leadership of each islands county "wait list",and decentrallized control of planning will allow leaders by community to take ownership of and increase both the effectiveness and to reduce the wait time for planning and development of advanced "green" communities, and needed infrastructures to support current, and plan for solid future needs.

The specific focus of agribusiness will provide 100% of each islands Hawaii food production, distribution and 100% sustainable independence by island. The replanting, and regreening of all islands will heighten the tourist experience, and the aina of the land for the people of Hawaii. The "road to Hana" on Maui must be regreened and tropical including developing all park areas and setting aside lands with long term large scale koa reforestation projects for all islands. The beauty of our islands is unparalled, and needs to be replenished for a strong and beautiful future for our children.

I will reduce Taxes for all ages and income groups, by increasing the minimum wage to $9.50 and the home exemption to $500k+ effectively doubling revenues to create a budget surplus of $1B+ for Hawaii. These funds will paydown real estate, and other taxes to reduce the impact on fixed income seniors, middle income wage earners, the young, and the poor.

New community urban city revitalization programs will include new technology, industry centers, transaction grids, multi-use buildings, walking communities, and low income housing with a goal of 100% independent services by community. New home incentives for owners to develop urban botanical gardens, victory backyard gardens including plants, vegetables, and native Hawaiian flowers will revitalize neigborhoods and balance in family life.

Entertainment infrastructure on the islands will include building new and updating existing sports/entertainment facilities by island to allow professional baseball, football, and soccer teams, movies, and world class concerts in Hawaii. An emphasis on PAL will bring both state, county and city workers closer together with the families of our islands. These are the huis which create our family structure by community and need to be nourished to sustain respect of the youth for the leaders in our state, the everyday heros the moms, dads, grandpas, and grandmas, the ohana anties and uncles.

The goal of creating 100% energy independence by Hawaiian island can be achieved using reliable, low cost solar tube technology with production capabilities of 50 MWe per tube, 4 tubes per island will create 250MWe+ per island meeting the stated goal of 100% energy independence by island, complementing existing infrastructure. The power will be used to create desalination, and pumping facilities to regreen all our communities.

After recycling, new advanced waste management techniques with a 500' rotating pipe can safely reduce and separate the islands waste volume significantly.

Shredded, recycled waste tires will create new environmentally friendly rubber sidewalks, driveways, and guard rails on all islands.

A new financial services in Hawaii, including a new Hawaii Stock Exchange (HSX) with partnerships with all major US, EEC, and Asian stock exchanges will create a new multibillion dollar industry here. Hawaii is perfect for the financial services industry with partnerships with the leaders in the US, EEC and Asian retail, proprietary trading, private equity, derivatives hedging, banking, private banking, insurance, and investment banking communities.

New state, county, and local paper digitization program to reduce paperwork storage requirements especially in the state, and county legal, engineering, and planning departments will create state and county office space in existing office buildings. Six sigma reviews for efficiency of all programs at both the state, and county levels can identify bottlenecks in services and reconfirm the strength and quality of our services to reach the needs of the people.

I ask for your vote for the US Senate Hawaii on September 23,2006, to create the leadership to reach your goals and community visions for today and the future. My commitment is to make each person's life better on all the beautiful islands of Hawaii, and to restore the peoples trust in our US Senate leadership.

Thank you for this opportunity to speak my mind.

Have a great day!

Thank you Mr. Pirkowski for visiting my blog and presenting your platform. You have the honor of being the first candidate to do so. If you become the GOP nominee, you will have my full support.

I wonder if Dog the Bounty Hunter considered entering this race.

so you finally started your own blog--good luck--even w/ a good candidate, and akaka's primary troubles, i have a hard time seeing a gop senator from hawaii any time soon, even if lingle were the nominee--i think she needs an open seat when inouye retires to have a real shot.
