Mississippi U.S. Senate Race

Race of the Day

Mississippi U.S. Senate

August 14, 2012
84 Days Until Election Day

Status: Republican Incumbent
2008 Presidential Result: Red State (South)

Outlook: Safe Republican

First appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy in 2007, and elected in a 2008 special election, Republican Roger Wicker will easily win a full six-year term over Democrat Albert Gore.

No, not that Al Gore, but Albert N. Gore, a retired minister, who is also apparently the Chairman of the Oktibbeha County Democrats, wherever that place is in Mississippi. Gore is 82 years old, has no money and no organization, and yet somehow won almost 57% of the vote in a three-way primary back in March, that included an elected official that was supposed to win the nomination. This was a major upset to say the least, and while crazy things often happen in low-profile, low-turnout primaries, the name of "Albert Gore" on a Democrat ballot must have been an Inconvenient Truth to his opponents.

Of course, the other Al Gore would get smoked in a general election in Mississippi and this one will too.
