Utah Governor Race
Race of the Day
Utah Governor
October 8, 2008
27 Days Until Election Day
Status: Republican Incumbent
2004 Presidential Result: Red State (West)
Status: Safe Republican
First elected in 2004, Republican Jon Huntsman serves as Governor as what is widely considered to be the most Republican state in the country and also has sky-high approval ratings. Despite the fact that the state's Republicans favored Mitt Romney for the party's Presidential nomination this year by more than massive numbers, Huntsman was actually an early supporter of the John McCain campaign. There does not seem to be much in the way of hard feelings at this point though as the state's many Republicans join a large number of Independents and even Democrats in supporting the incumbent over the Democrats' nominee, management consultant Bob Springmeyer. The wealthy and well-coiffed Republican will trounce the bow-tied and bearded Democrat by a margin that might not be surpassed by any two party contested statewide contest anywhere in America this year.
When discussing Utah political blowouts, it is a custom on my part to joke that Huntsman would have to be caught doing something along the lines of an illicit encounter with several Osmond siblings, teen pop sensation David Archuleta, and Karl "The Mailman" Malone for this race to approach competitiveness.
